In this chapter we have considered principles that underlie our efforts at easing shame. Shame can be addressed through social change and reduction of the external forces impacting us adversely, or through personal change in the direction of greater self-acceptance, humanization of our ideals and goals, increased access to potentially supportive current and past relationships, and achievement of internal control over the source of shameful feelings. These principles will be considered next from the perspective of what we ourselves can do to manage and regulate our shame.

When shame pervades a person’s daily life, it does not matter whether its roots are societal or personal. What matters is the intense discomfort and inhibition the person feels. In the next chapter, we will explore how individuals not in therapy can begin to lift their burden of shame.
